Some songs have a way of morphing on me after I've been singing them for awhile, and this is one. What follows is the version I sing out now. It starts with the first verse instead of the chorus and I rewrote the third verse, but otherwise it's not that much different from the recorded version. Co-writer Jack Williams has recorded a live version of this, and it... you guessed it... is another version. ~ Geoff
It's always rainin' when the tire goes flat
The dog comes in when you put out the cat
We're all gettin' older ain't no way around that
Like the world goes around it's a natural fact
We're all alike, we're all alike
We all know the diff'rence 'tween wrong & right
We all put the baby in the cradle every night
We all need love & that's all right, we're all alike
Little brothers & sisters they got so mean
Threw my guitar in the washin' machine
It don't play no more but it sure is clean
They're a wild bunch of kids know what I mean?
We're all alike, we're all alike
We all know the diff'rence 'tween wrong & right
We all put the baby in the cradle every night
We all need love & that's all right, we're all alike
Third verse on the CD:
Folks around here put their foot in my mouth
They make me think of packin' up & headin' down south
Where everybody's named Bubba, nobody named Ralph
I'm sittin' on the front porch pleased as can be
Spittin' watermelon seeds on my baby & me!
New third verse:
The kids keep growing every one of 'em's mine
Mama & Papa on the telephone line
The shack's paid off & the weather looks fine
I'm sittin' on the front porch pleased as can be
Spittin' watermelon seeds on my baby & me!
Red yellow black & tan
All the little children seem to understand
It's gonna be the fire or the fryin' pan
We can make it all together through any kind of weather
Keep a willin' heart & an open hand
'Cause we're all alike, we're all alike
We all know the diff'rence 'tween wrong & right
We all put the baby in the cradle every night
We all need love & that's all right, we're all alike
