Hear That Wind Howl cover

Geoff Bartley     Hear That Wind Howl     Waterbug Records WBG-0052

If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day / Sittin' On Top Of The World / Grinnin' In Your Face (Live) / The Dying Crapshooter's Blues / Papa's On The Housetop / Prize Your Reputation / Crossroads Blues (Live) / Lemonade / When You Got A Good Friend / Everything They Told Me / Peaceable Street / The Fullerton Street Strut / No Money Down (Live) / Duncan And Brady / Denomination Blues / Come On In My Kitchen (Live) (1999)

Despite the song list presented here, Bartley is no mere Robert Johnson wannabe. Instead of coarsening his voice and trying to sound like an old Delta bluesman, he presents these songs in a straightforward manner that comes from an intimate knowledge of the source materials, but as transmuted through his own experience. This is coffeehouse music of the highest order; the originals fit in nicely with the old standards (a number of Robert Johnson classics alongside warhorses like "Sittin' on Top of the World"), and his playing is effortlessly swinging. Bartley did his own liner notes for this, and they illustrate his deep understanding of the music as well. A modern-day folk-blues album that really has something to contribute.
~ Cub Coda, All Music Guide,

"Geoff has a warm, intimate way of playing Country Blues. His own songs are thoughtful and moving,
his guitar playing elegant and supple. I've been waiting a long time for him to make this record."
~ Paul Rishell, W.C. Handy Award winning blues singer & guitarist

"Hear That Wind Howl is the work of a seasoned vet. It's all here... the passion and restraint, the technique, the perspective that only comes with years of doing this and meaning it. This is Bartley at his best and most assured, the work of a pro who knows what to play and what to leave out. And best of all... it swings."
~ Bill Morrissey, songwriter & author

"On two levels, this recording pays homage to the guitar legends who created Delta and country blues. Bartley first shows that he can play and sing the classic songs with the restraint and dignity of a performer who has mastered the techniques, yet knows that in blues, soulfulness is as important as flashy licks. By adding a few of his own tunes, complete with his signature rollicking blues riffs and smooth vocals, Bartley also builds on the legacy of the past to create his own style of highly inspired, expressive contemporary blues."
~ Roger Deitz, Acoustic Guitar magazine Hot List

"Geoff Bartley's wonderful new CD, "Hear That Wind Howl", proves that he is among the country's preeminent interpreters of traditional blues. He delivers country blues classics with spellbinding guitar mastery, fluid vocal passion, and just the right edgy sense of fun."
Boston Globe Top Ten Folk Albums for 1996: Geoff Bartley, "Hear That Wind Howl" (Waterbug WBG-0052) "Local guitar hero finally indulges his fans with a long-awaited blues tour de force. He delivers haunting classics and a few smart originals with deep understanding, spellbinding guitar and sinewy, convincing vocals." ~ Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe
